1. Upwork
Best for long-term, higher-value clients and hourly contracts. You send proposals using connects, so quality matters more than quantity. Write the first two lines about the client's problem, not about yourself. Profile approval can be strict, so complete every section and add a portfolio before applying.
2. Fiverr
Best for beginners because buyers come to you. Create two or three narrow gigs (for example "I will fix WordPress speed and Core Web Vitals"), add a video, use all gig images and answer buyer requests every morning. Fiverr charges a 20% commission.
3. Freelancer.com
A large marketplace with contests and small jobs — useful for building early reviews, though competition on price is heavy. Treat it as a training ground, not a career.
4. PeoplePerHour
Popular with UK and European clients. Less crowded than Fiverr, and "hourlies" work like fixed packages. Strong choice for writers, designers and WordPress developers.
5. Toptal (for experienced professionals)
A screened network for the top tier of developers, designers and finance experts. The entry test is demanding, but rates are far above the marketplace average. Aim for it after two or three years of solid experience.
